Principle of Operation :
- If the annulus is held stationary and the sun gear is rotated. the planet gears are driven round the annulus at a speed governed by the size of the sun gear and planet gears relative to the annulus. The planet gears turn on their axes and force the carrier to rotate in the same direction as. but slower than. the sun gear. The output shaft. being an integral part of the carrier rotates with it.
- Practical Application. In the Eaton 9-speed transmissions. the ‘LOW RANGE’ or reduction mode ratio is achieved by sliding the range change synchroniser sleeve and the annulus into mesh with a flange which is secured by a reaction plate to the transmission rear case. This locks the annulus, and the output shaft therefore rotates in the same direction as. but slower than, the mainshaft.
- In the ‘HIGH RANGE’ or direct dn’ve mode the synchroniser sleeve is slid out of mesh with the reaction plate and into mesh with a flange splined to the planet gear carrier. As the annulus and the planet carrier are now locked together. the planet gears are no longer able to rotate. and the whole epicyclic assembly rotates as a single unit.
