- The term “four-cycle” describes the fact that four strokes of the pistons – INTAKE, COM- PRESSION, POWER and EXHAUST -— and two revolutions of the crankshaft are required to deliver one power impulse to the crankshaft. To allow the entry of air and the release of exhaust gases, each cylinder has a set of valves which open and close the passages between the air intake on the right side of the engine and the exhaust passage and muffler on the left side of the engine.
- The valves are located in a cylinder head bolted to the top of the cylinder block and are opened against spring pressure by a valve train timed to the rotation of the crankshaft. The valve train for each cylinder consists of a pivot shaft and sets of rocker arms, push rods and lifters.
- The rocker arms are retained on the pivot shaft by snap rings located at each end of the shaft. The shaft itself is mounted in a support pedestal which is bolted to the cylinder head. The rocker arms are actuated by push rods which provide the mechanical link between the lifters and the rocker arms. To provide the push rod up and down motion, the lifter “rides” on a camshaft which is gear driven by the crankshaft.
