When operating heavy equipment, the efficient operator will be guided by the 4 simple fundamental rules of safety. Always take the necessary precautions to as- sure the safety of fellow workers as well as yourself. Avoid careless operating habits which may cause injury to personnel and damage to machinery and equipment. To prevent accidents, the following general rules and precautions are recommended: ’ Never carry passengers on the machine.
Never get off machine in motion. Use your seat belt . it is provided for your protection. For safety’s sake always buckle up before “buckling down” to the job. Do not attempt to move machine while brake warning “buzzer” is on. Watch clearances when traveling. Be on the alert for overhead obstacles. Check for adequate side clearances when traveling. Get the assistance of a ground man when clearances cannot be ascertained from the operator’s position.
Before crossing bridges, check the capacity to determine if it will support the machine’s weight. 4 Keep brakes properly adjusted to prevent possible injury to ground personnel – or damage to property and equipment. Always apply parking brake before leaving the machine. Do not leave the machine with the bucket in a raised position. Always block bucket securely before attempting to work under it in a raised position. Keep floors clean and free of grease, ice and mud to prevent accidents by slip- plug. Never clean, lubricate r repair the machine while it is running.
